7% Turnout for the General Election in Korea – the Highest in 32 Years

The National Election Commission of Korea announced that 67.0 percent of voters cast ballots for the 22nd general elections, which took place on Sunday. The main polls, which started at 6 a.m., had the highest turnout for the general elections in 32 years since the 14th general elections (71.9 percent) in 1992. Of the 44.28 million voters, 29,662,313 cast ballots.

In terms of region, Sejong had the highest voter turnout (70.2 percent), followed by Seoul (69.3 percent), South Jeolla Province (69.0 percent), and Gwangju (68.2 percent). South Gyeongsang Province (67.6 percent), Busan (67.5 percent), and North Jeolla Province (67.4 percent) also had high voter turnout. The lowest voter turnout was Jeju Island (62.2 percent).

There seem to be a number of factors behind this high turnout. Early voting on the 5th and 6th also recorded the highest participants (31.3%) ever, and the turnout for overseas elections, which took place from the 27th to the 1st of last month, also reached an all-time high of 62.8%.
