Recently, the government's inappropriate response to various issues at the "2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree" has arisen as a controversy.

“2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree” is the 25th World Scout Jamboree Competition hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF), Jeollabuk-do, and the World Scout Jamboree Organizing Committee in Saemangeum, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. Unlike the high expectations, as the poor management of the event was unveiled, the appraisement of the Jamboree reached its worst.

At the event, which was held from August 1 to 12, more than 400 attendees suffered from thermal diseases, participants faced massive pest damage, and COVID-19 spread throughout the camping site, leading to participants’ heated criticism. As it was revealed that the incident was due to insufficient medical facilities, auxiliary facilities, and injuries handling system, public criticism sparked for neglecting globewide participants in poor conditions.

The Korean government supported them by establishing a Jamboree emergency task force and directing the addition of national tourism to the program, but controversy arose as TheGuardian reported that “the Korean Government was restricting negative reports”, while some domestic news media flooded positive news reports appraising the Jamboree. Criticism increased as the public also pointed out that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo unnecessarily ordered emergency support to Army Corps of Engineers and surgeons less than a month after the death of a private in the 1st Marine Division. Meanwhile, the Jamboree event was closed early due to poor operation and a typhoon appraching, but the participants carried out the remaining schedule traveling different places and experiencing Korean culture. (NEWSIS)
