NFL 2023 preseason major trades and signings

Recap of 3 major NFL 2023 preseason player transactions: Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr., and Jimmy Garropolo

As the beginning of the 2023-2024 season of National Football League (NFL) approaches, all 32 teams of the league have actively been engaging in trades and signings. Several teams have decided to extend or renew the contracts with their current players. Conversely, a multitude of players were signed by or traded to another teams, causing surprises among the fanbases of both ends of the transactions. This article aims to highlight 3 significant transactions made by NFL teams prior to the upcoming season.

1. Packers trade Aaron Rodgers to Jets

After 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was traded to New York Jets.

The Packers agreed to deal Rodgers and their 2023 first-round pick (No. 15) and a 2023 fifth-round pick (No. 170) to the Jets for New York's 2023 first-round pick (No. 13), a 2023 second-round pick (No. 42), a 2023 sixth-round pick (No. 207) and a conditional 2024 second-round pick that becomes a first if Rodgers plays 65% of the plays this season

Throughout his career with the Packers, Rodgers has won three MVP awards, which he earned in 2011, 2014, and 2020. Rodgers also led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV. Rodgers has thrown for total 59055 yards and 475 touchdowns.

2. Ravens sign Odell Beckham Jr.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. comes back from ACL injury and joins Baltimore Ravens.

Beckham Jr. agreed to one-year deal with the Ravens, which includes $13.835 million signing bonus, $1.165 million base salary and $3 million in incentives. 

Beckham Jr. had played in the league for 9 seasons with three different teams: New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Los Angeles Rams. Beckham Jr. recorded multiple seasons with with over 1000 receiving yards and was selected to the Pro Bowl three times. However, Beckham Jr. tore his ACL during the Super Bowl LVI, which prevented him from playing in the 2022-2023 seasons.

3. Raiders sign Jimmy Garoppolo

Las Vegas Raiders fill their quarterback need with former San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garroppolo.

Garoppolo entered his free agency at the end of 2022-2023 season as his contract with San Francisco 49ers has ended. Garoppolo agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million deal, including $34 million guaranteed, with Las Vegas Raiders. 

Garoppolo has played for 9 seasons for the 49ers and the Patriots. Garoppolo led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, despite ultimately losing to the Chiefs. Garropolo has recorded the most passing yards in a single season by a 49ers quarterback, with 4137 yards in 2019.
